ECI Inmate Dies From Apparent Suicide
No foul play suspected
TOWSON, MD (February 1, 2012) --- A 26-year old inmate awaiting sentencing on recent counterfeiting, weapons, and other convictions apparently committed suicide this morning at Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI) in Westover.
Correctional staff found Matthew Schirling in his cell around 6 a.m. Four officers immediately began CPR and continued it until medical personnel arrived. The inmate was pronounced dead a short time later.
At this time, there is no indication of foul play. Detectives from the DPSCS Internal Investigative Unit are on the scene and consulting with prison officials, the medical examiner, and outside law enforcement.
The deceased inmate had been serving a sentence of eight years and ten months on robbery and drug convictions. He had been convicted this week of other charges as well, and was facing a lengthy additional prison sentence.
The family was notified by the prison chaplain’s office.
