Inmate taken to hospital after assault at WCI
TOWSON, MD (Oct. 7, 2011) – A Western Correctional Institution (WCI) inmate was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center after a stabbing at the institution Friday morning. The inmate, who will not be identified, was alert when he was taken out of the facility.
The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit has been notified about the incident.
Division of Correction and WCI officials are investigating. Five suspected assailants have been placed on administrative segregation pending the outcome of the investigation. Officers found three homemade weapons.
The incident did not disrupt the normal operations of the facility.
The incident occurred during mass movement as inmates were returning from lunch. At about 11:40 a.m., the assailant(s) stabbed the victim on a walkway.
Western Correctional Institution is a maximum-security institution located in Cresaptown, southwest of Cumberland, MD. It houses about 1,650 inmates.
