A Treasure Trove for DPSCS Correctional Libraries Thanks to the Parole Rotary
(December 3, 2012) --- The Parole Rotary made its second large donation to Department of Public Safety and Correctional Service (DPSCS) prison and pre-release center libraries today, presenting close to 900 books during a ceremony held at Maryland Correctional Enterprises in Jessup.
DPSCS Secretary Gary Maynard and Leonard Howie, III, Secretary of the MD Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation - which runs prison libraries - both spoke passionately about the need to help inmates change, and the critical role reading and correctional libraries play in that.
The book handover was held at Maryland Correctional Enterprises (MCE) because the large quantity of books was boxed and moved by MCE. It was a fitting location to announce the gift for another reason: inmates cannot apply for the coveted MCE jobs until they get their GED, and reading and libraries are a big part of that process.
The Rotary’s Books for International Goodwill project has handed over more than five million books, both locally and globally.
DPSCS is most appreciative of this tremendous benevolence, which will go a long way toward helping inmates who want to change do just that.
