Change of Leadership Ceremony for MD Pre-Release System
December 8, 2011 – Amid colleagues, family and friends, Betty Johnson was officially installed as the Warden of the Maryland Correctional Pre-Release System (MCPRS) on Wednesday, December 7th. The Change of Leadership ceremony, held at the Brockbridge Correctional Facility (BCF) in Jessup, featured an Honor Guard, presentations by correctional leadership and the ceremonial passing of the key from the former Warden.
The Pre-Release System oversees five minimum and pre-release correctional facilities in Maryland, where offenders reside when they are nearing the end of their sentence. The facilities include BCF and the Jessup Pre-Release Unit (JPRU) in Jessup, MD, Central Maryland Correctional Facility (CMCF) in Sykesville, MD, Eastern Pre-Release Unit (EPRU) in Church Hill, MD, and the Southern Maryland Pre-Release Unit (SMPRU) in Charlotte Hall, MD.
Warden Johnson will play an integral role in preparing offenders for their eventual return to the community. Offenders in MCPRS facilities are offered a variety of programming, including drug-treatment, work release and participation on a Public Safety Works crew to learn job skills while giving back to society.
Starting as a Correctional Officer I at Patuxent Institution in 1992, Johnson has also served as the Assistant Director of Security Operations for custody, and as Security Chief and Assistant Warden for the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup, MD. She takes over for William Filbert who had been Warden at MCPRS since 2007 before being promoted this past year.
